Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
The school term finishes on Friday of this week, 23rd June, at 2.20pm. We wish all students a safe, refreshing break so they can be ready to come back to our winter term. Although a shorter term, this term has been very busy with lots of learning, Mother’s Day activities and celebrations, sporting events and more.
I was glad to arrive home safely from studying in Belgium. It was a very intense two weeks of learning at the KU University. The course was about how to maintain a relevant Catholic identity in a secularised and pluralised world. Participants came from Sale Diocese, as well as Melbourne, Sandhurst and Paramatta. I will continue to work with these people and the University on how we can maintain a community that dialogues with all faith traditions, respects different beliefs, yet retains our own Catholic identity in a relevant way for our students.
Thanks to Camillo Redi for stepping up as Acting Principal in my absence and doing such great work!
Setting routines are important as they can provide a predictable, safe environment where independence is increased and positive habits develop. Starting from Term 3, our morning routine will be refined for all students.
Gates will continue to be opened at 8:30am each morning and we ask that by 8:50am all students are at school. Gates will be closed at 8:50am and supervision at the carline will cease. Students arriving after 8:50am will need to make their way through the office area. From 8:50am music will play to signal students to move to assemble in class groups on the basketball court. By 8:53am a bell will ring and by this time, all students should be lined up ready to be moved inside. Learning begins each day at 9am, students arriving after this time will be marked late.
Please note, the office will make contact with you if you haven’t provided a reason for absence by 10am. If contact cannot be made with the parent, guardian and/or carer, the school may contact emergency contact(s) nominated on the student's file, held by the school.
To help support us with this refined morning routine, a simple table is below for you to reinforce this with your child/ren.

On Friday the P and F provided a disco for both Junior and Senior students. There were some great dancers, movers and shakers at both events. The students really enjoyed it and we are grateful for this enjoyable initiative from the P and F. It is wonderful to be able to enjoy these types of events again.
I will be taking some long-awaited long service leave at the beginning of term 3. Mr Camillo Redi will be Acting Principal and Mrs Vanessa Barry will be Acting Deputy Principal for the first three weeks of the term. I know the school is in good hands and that you will all give them your support.
Enjoy your family time!
Best wishes,
Ros Joyner
Principal

Study in Jerusalem: Mrs Mulqueen
I’m very excited to be one of five teachers from our diocese selected to study Scripture in Israel from 24 June until 9 July, 2023.
We are the recipients of the Sion Scholarship, an initiative of the Diocese of Sale Catholic Education since 2005. The course is run by the Sion Sisters at the Centre of Biblical Formation situated at Ecce Homo Convent in Jerusalem. We will study the Gospel of Mark and visit sites to help us understand Scripture in the context of the past and present. This rich experience will also help us gain insight into Christianity’s Jewish roots, and provide an opportunity to connect with other people of faith.
I would love to share my journey with our school community so while I’m away I will endeavour to share some of my experiences via our school Facebook page and ClassDojo.
When preparing for this visit, I invited each of the classes to write a prayer. I’m taking these prayers to Jerusalem and I will offer them to God by inserting them between the stones of the ancient Western Wall, the most sacred site for those of Jewish faith. To learn more about this custom, your family may like to watch this short video at https://youtu.be/ARlbqYfN9YA
Finally, I’m very grateful to be a part of this scholarship group and to have this opportunity to visit Jerusalem. I look forward to sharing my journey with you.
Here is a sample of the beautiful prayers written by our classes.

A message from Deacon Mark
All Good! God has it.
Exactly what we need to hear in times of stress and uncertainty! (Matt 10:26-33). Present and future are as clouded as they have ever been and even the past seems to be subject to reinterpretation! Comfortable pillars like rewards for hard work, guaranteed employment, health protection and physical security are crumbling. Confidence in law makers and law enforcers, spiritual and church leaders is wobbly.
Naturally we worry about day to day issues and circumstances. We’re human. Not to be concerned, perhaps even fearful, would be abnormal and we do need to take steps to respond to new issues and circumstances. But Jesus encourages us to lift our eyes beyond the disturbing present uncertainties. In the face of perplexing challenges our Christianity comes to the fore. Declaring for Him, living discipleship, “proclaiming from the housetops,” is how we respond. God gives us choice for or against his Kingdom values of justice, mercy and forgiveness.
Do we work to limit the spread of coronavirus, graciously accepting weeks of inconvenience for the good of all? Do we scramble, hoard and focus on ourselves instead of the poor and vulnerable in our midst who are suffering and at greater risk than ever? Do we with relatively minor hassles generously support those without food or a safe place to live or rest?
All creation is precious to God and humans of inestimable value (Matt 10:29-30). Are we active in proclaiming and defending the preciousness of all humanity even if we ourselves are endangered? Do we strive to uphold the dignity and worth of all? To ensure work, shelter, health, education and opportunity for all both now and into the future.
With our eyes lifted to the Kingdom then we needn’t stress about what we don’t know or about threats from outside. God has it all in hand.
Deacon Mark Kelly

SCHOOL TV SPECIAL REPORT: Celebrating NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is celebrated by all Australians and is a great opportunity to recognise and learn more about the history and culture of indigenous communities.
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced back to the Aboriginal rights movement, when on Australia Day 1938, protestors marched through the streets of Sydney to highlight the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Today, it is a week-long celebration held in July that consists of range of traditional and contemporary activities.
NAIDOC Week is an important event that helps build positive relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. It enables a deeper understanding of our differences and similarities. NAIDOC week is an opportunity for all Australians to eliminate bias and discrimination by reflecting and reconciling the wrongs of the past to facilitate hope and build a fairer future. Families are encouraged to join in and support young people in learning the significance of NAIDOC Week.
This Special Report offers suggestions on how families can celebrate NAIDOC Week together. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please seek medical or professional help.

This next presentation from The Resilience Project is all about Empathy and Kindness.
Empathy is our ability to put ourselves in the shoes of others to feel and see what they do. We practice this through being kind and compassionate towards other people.
Brain imaging data shows that being kind to others registers in the brain as more like eating chocolate than like fulfilling an obligation to do what’s right (e.g., eating brussels sprout)!
Research shows that practicing empathy, such as performing acts of kindness, taps into our brain’s ‘mirror neurons’, builds compassion and our behaviour becomes more social and community-based.

Part 3 - Empathy: https://theresilienceproject.com.au/2023-parent-carer-hub-inspire-hugh/
Here’s an activity to practise empathy and kindness:
- Reflect on someone in your life who could benefit from an act of kindness today. It could be a friend who would love some affirmation about their work, your pet who deserves an extra treat, or a family member who would love a phone call or text message.
- Make a plan for who you are going to give an act of kindness to, and what you are going to do.
- If you want to add accountability to your plan, share it with someone else and encourage them to do the same thing.
- Follow up with each other in a few days time to ask how it went!

Please note the WRC bus loop is NOT a bus stop, yet a bus transfer station only. All students travelling on the Government School bus system must travel to and from their home address to their designated school only.
Current Child Safety Laws and the Conditions of Bus Travel do not allow students to leave the bus transition area. If your child does not intend on travelling to their home address they must depart from their school of origin. Thank you for your understanding. WRC
The bus loop is continually experiencing a high volume of students entering and exiting on foot during the busy bus transition period which is placing unnecessary pressure on bus supervision. Although it may be convenient for parents to collect their children from the WRC bus loop, leaving the bus loop is not permitted for any reason. Child safety laws and the Conditions of Bus Travel stated on all Government applications do not allow a supervising school to permit students to leave the bus loop safely.

Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour
The S.T.A.R. Raffle is back and our first raffle winners have been drawn.
Congratulations to:
- Eve Barake
- Maggie Mills
The raffle tickets are an incentive to encourage our students to consistently demonstrate our School Wide Expectations with their behaviour..
- T
AKE RESPONSIBILITY
- ACT SAFELY
- BE RESPECTFUL
Our Staff are on the lookout to recognise and celebrate our students CONSISTENTLY being a S.T.A.R. by rewarding them with a raffle ticket.
2 tickets will be drawn each assembly and students can choose a prize.
Have a conversation with your child about what it means to be a S.T.A.R. at St. Joseph’s.
In Term One, you would have received a presentation from their class illustrating practical ways they can demonstrate these expectations. Further to this, our Staff have developed a matrix which highlights the behaviours we expect of all the members of our community.
Reflection Forms
Some of you may have received a Reflection Form that your child has completed. Thank you for returning them.
The forms allow students to consider their choices, how they felt and how they can make improved choices in the future.
More importantly, they inform us and assist us to gain a better understanding of our students' behaviour and how we can support them.
The Forms will be completed by a teacher with the student. The teacher and student will sign the form. The form will then be sent home for the parent/guardian to read, sign and return to school.
Contact will be made with parents/guardians prior to the form coming home.

Absences & Holidays
In Victoria, it is compulsory for children and young people aged 6–17 years to attend school.
Parents are legally required to ensure their child attends school every day and to provide an explanation for their child's absence from school unless an exemption from attendance has been granted or an exception to their attendance applies.
Absences
If your child is away sick or away due to a planned absence or appointment, please ensure you advise the school office. Student absence text messages are sent out if your child is marked as absent without a reason. In some cases, if you email your child's classroom teacher, they may be away and may not be able to check their emails to forward to the office. It is imperative that you notify the office through one of the following methods:
1. Log into PAM (Parent Access Module) and register your child's absence;
2. Email absence@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au
3. Phone the office on 5623 2943
When sending an email, you may wish to "cc" your child's classroom teacher so they are aware of the absence too.
Holidays
If you are planning an extended holiday (a week or more) during the school term, please email info@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au addressing your intentions to our Principal, Mrs Roslyn Joyner.
