Message from our Acting Principal
Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
I hope you are staying warm as Winter 2023 takes hold.
Recently, we held a poster competition amongst the students to promote our STAR acronym. STAR embodies the values that our school community here at St Joseph's strives to achieve each day - a Responsible, Safe and Respectful School Community. Congratulations to Evelyn from 5/6FM for designing the winning poster which will become a fixture in all of our promotion of our Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour Support. Taking responsibility, acting safely and always being respectful are very important actions at school and we encourage you all to refer to these at home to reinforce our work here at St Joseph's.
This week classrooms celebrated National Reconciliation Week through a range of classroom activities and prayers. The children learnt that together we can build on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the wider community. All classrooms listened to and sang a different version of the Our Father by Andrew Chinn called the Aboriginal Our Father.
Our Year 3/4's are off on their camp experience next week. We wish them all the best and hope they have an amazing time, exploring the camp facilities at Forest Edge. I look forward to heading out on Monday to join the students, although my days on the flying fox are well and truly over.
Mrs Joyner has arrived safely in Belgium and has begun her study tour of University Leuven. We look forward to hearing about her tour and all of her new learnings.
Have a wonderful fortnight ahead!
Camillo Redi
Acting Principal

St Joseph's Can Challenge
A message from Deacon Mark
Sign of the Cross
Trinity, this Sunday's feast, defines us as Christians (John 3:16-18).Whatever else we are, we are Trinitarians. By far the most common Christian gesture is the "Sign of the Cross," accompanied normally by the simple prayer "In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit". Catholics, Orthodox, Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, Uniting Church and other Christians proclaim the prayer at Baptism; services of worship open and close with the prayer and many use it at reception of Communion. Catholics, and many other Christians, dip fingers in holy water and bless themselves with the sign of the cross when entering a church and many homes still have a holy water font where families invoke the Trinity as they enter or leave. Foreheads are marked with an ash cross on Ash Wednesday and with a cross of chrism oil at Confirmation. Footballers, athletes, soldiers and others bless themselves and recite the prayer before challenging events and some Christians use the sign of the cross in everyday activities such as cooking or cutting.
Each and every time we invoke this simple prayer, we reaffirm our faith in the Holy Trinity and in the saving cross of Christ. We entrust ourselves to our loving creator Father, to the Son who taught us and died for our salvation and to the Holy Spirit who guides and protects us. In summary it is the essence of our Christianity.

Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour
Thank you to the families who voted for the posters that they felt communicated our S.T.A.R. acronym (We are a School Community who Take Responsibility, Act Safely and are Always Respectful) and our School Wide Expectations: Take Responsibility, Act Safely and Always Respectful.
The posters selected will be displayed in our foyer and used as promotional tools within our community.

S.T.A.R. RAFFLE 2023
The S.T.A.R. Raffle returns for 2023. The raffle tickets are an incentive to encourage our students to consistently demonstrate our School Wide Expectations with their behaviour.
Our Staff are on the lookout to recognise and celebrate our students CONSISTENTLY being a S.T.A.R. by rewarding them with a raffle ticket.
2 tickets will be drawn each assembly and students can choose a prize.
Have a conversation with your child about what it means to be a S.T.A.R. at St. Joseph’s.
In Term One, you would have received a presentation from their class illustrating practical ways they can demonstrate these expectations. Further to this, our Staff have developed a matrix which highlights the behaviours we expect of all the members of our community.
Reflection Forms
Some of you may have received a Reflection Form that your child has completed. Thank you for returning them.
The forms allow students to consider their choices, how they felt and how they can make improved choices in the future.
More importantly, they inform us and assist us to gain a better understanding of our students' behaviour and how we can support them.
The Forms will be completed by a teacher with the student. The teacher and student will sign the form. The form will then be sent home for the parent/guardian to read, sign and return to school.
Contact will be made with parents/guardians prior to the form coming home.

SchoolTV - Mobile Phone Separation Anxiety
A SPECIAL REPORT: Mobile Phone Separation Anxiety
The use of mobile phones and technology in schools has been a highly debated topic internationally, including in Australia. Almost all states and territories in Australia, have implemented full bans on mobile phones during class, recess, and lunch times, while allowing students to carry their phones during travel to and from school.
Critics argue that there is no evidence supporting the effectiveness of such bans, but this is a mischaracterisation. Studies have shown the positive impacts of mobile phone bans in schools. One study conducted in 2016, found that banning mobile phones led to an increase in student performance, with test scores improving by 6.4% of a standard deviation. Similar studies from Spain and Norway also supported these findings.
For parents concerned about mobile phone separation anxiety in their children, it is important to acknowledge it as a real issue and discuss the negative effects of phone addiction, such as sleep problems and mental health issues. Gradually introducing phone-free periods at home, setting clear expectations and boundaries and modelling healthy behaviours can help your child cope. It is also crucial to establish a support network and seek professional help if needed. Implementing mobile phone bans in schools allows for better focus on teaching and learning, minimising distractions and interruptions.
This Special Report will help address mobile phone separation anxiety and provide guidance on supporting your child’s wellbeing during this transition period.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

This week’s presentation from The Resilience Project focuses on Gratitude.
Gratitude is paying attention to the things that we have right now, and not worrying about what we don’t have. We practise this by noticing the positives that exist around us.
Research shows that practicing gratitude rewires our brains to overcome the negativity bias (which can lead to anxiety and depression) and see the world for what we are thankful for. It is also shown to broaden thinking, and increase physical health through improved sleep and attitude to exercise.

There are many ways in which you can practise gratitude, including starting a gratitude journal. You can simply use a notebook to list three things that went well for you each day, or use a more comprehensive Wellbeing Journal, like those created by The Resilience Project.

- Who test positive to COVID-19 should stay home and isolate for five (5) days;
- Should not attend school after five (5) days if still symptomatic;
- Who are symptomatic but have not tested positive should not attend school until their symptoms resolve;
- Parents, guardians or carers advise the school of the COVID-19 positive test result.
To assist with limiting the spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses, parents, guardians and carers should be strongly encouraged to ensure that their child(ren) remain at home if they are unwell, including if they have tested positive to COVID-19.
Absences & Holidays
In Victoria, it is compulsory for children and young people aged 6–17 years to attend school.
Parents are legally required to ensure their child attends school every day and to provide an explanation for their child's absence from school unless an exemption from attendance has been granted or an exception to their attendance applies.
Absences
If your child is away sick or away due to a planned absence or appointment, please ensure you advise the school office. Student absence text messages are sent out if your child is marked as absent without a reason. In some cases, if you email your child's classroom teacher, they may be away and may not be able to check their emails to forward to the office. It is imperative that you notify the office through one of the following methods:
1. Log into PAM (Parent Access Module) and register your child's absence;
2. Email absence@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au
3. Phone the office on 5623 2943
When sending an email, you may wish to "cc" your child's classroom teacher so they are aware of the absence too.
Holidays
If you are planning an extended holiday (a week or more) during the school term, please email info@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au addressing your intentions to our Principal, Mrs Roslyn Joyner.
