Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
On Friday 11th May, we had another wonderful Mother’s Day celebration. It was delightful to see the students so proudly acknowledging their mothers and special people in their lives. This day is one of our highlights for the year. It was great to see so many people attend. We thank the Marist-Sion students who assisted in the preparations for this special occasion. Thanks also to the P and F for their contribution to the school community in organising the Mother’s Day stall. This is something the children enjoy immensely.
We are preparing for our next stage in our building project which will begin during the term 2 holidays. It will be exciting to see the year 1/ 2 classrooms, library and multipurpose areas refurbished. This will mean some movement for these classes for the remainder of the year, however, we are looking at options that will minimise any disruption as much as possible. The year 1/ 2 classes will be moving to classrooms adjacent to each other and opposite year 3 /4 classrooms in the main building with the sensory room being relocated. The library will be moved to the old administration area near Performing Arts. These relocations will occur during the last week of term 2 so the children will be familiar with their new environment before returning after the holidays. This is the next stage of our master plan following the much-needed roof replacement last holidays. Special thanks to the P and F who have been assisting Bernie to move the library this week. Thanks also to Bernard Miron for his expertise and willingness to go the extra mile in his work with us.
Staff and students are continuing to work together under our Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour Support (WSAPBS), which will be the focus of the next professional development day on June 14th. The WSAPBS team will lead this day with support from our school counsellor Belinda. Student wellbeing is very much a priority for us and we are continually looking for partnerships that can support us in this work.
Best wishes,
Roslyn Joyner
Principal
Catholic Education Week - 19 May to 26 May

The theme for this year’s celebrations is based on Colossians 4:6:
The ‘Speaking with Grace’ theme invites us to consider the power of our words and the impact our words may have on others. Words have the power to inspire, uplift, and transform lives but they can also be hurtful or discouraging. This year’s theme aims to encourage students and those in our school community to use their words to build up others, to speak out against injustice, and to spread love and hope in the world.
Members of our staff will be attending a Leadership Mass and Dinner in Traralgon to celebrate and recognise outstanding service and excellence of staff and students in Catholic education in our Diocese.
Grade 3/4F will lead our school community in prayer to celebrate Catholic Education Week at our assembly on Friday May 26th.

St Joseph's Can Challenge
A message from Deacon Mark
What are we to do?
So, we approach the end of another Easter season. We have re-lived Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection. In the light of it all, what are we to do? The definitive answer is here in this Sunday’s gospel from Matthew (Matt28:16-20). Jesus’ closest disciples have lived the mission with him: learning, growing, tentative success, failure, betrayal, their own cowardice, the awesome resurrection. They have been invited to this mountain top where Jesus is leaving them to the task he has commanded.
And what is it they are called to? No less than making disciples of all, baptising all, teaching all to observe his commandments. Big job, but they and we can’t say we weren’t told.
This is the day when Jesus’ first disciples (and we later followers) take a deep breath and consider the enormity of the task in light of Jesus’ promise to be with us always to the end of time.
Impossible for Jesus’ ill-educated riff raff without power or connections! Yet by the time the last of them had died, their revolutionary message of God who loves all equally and absolutely, had spread and had profound effect across the Mediterranean. Today, nearly a third of the world are Christians but we, heirs to those first disciples, still have a big task to complete.
Firstly we need to re-convert ourselves: are we living the commands? Are we sharing Jesus’ teaching with our brothers and sisters? Then we commit to re-convert many in our supposedly Christian society who obviously haven’t properly heard or understood, or whose hearts have not been touched by Jesus’ teaching. And then we ponder how to make, through the example of our society’s selfless love, generosity, compassion and care, disciples of all nations.
Deacon Mark Kelly

Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour
Our students have been very creative and produced excellent posters that will promote being a S.T.A.R; Take Responsibility, Act Safely and Always Respectful at St. Joseph's. But there can only be one of each!
The W.S.AP.B.S. Team have made a shortlist of posters and now need you to follow the link and vote on the posters which most effectively communicate the themes.
https://forms.gle/W4W2tJ8A6hSaDwLn8
Thank you to the families who have voted on their favourite posters
Reflection Forms
Some of you may have received a Reflection Form that your child has completed. Thank you for returning them.
The forms allow students to consider their choices, how they felt and how they can make improved choices in the future.
More importantly, they inform us and assist us to gain a better understanding of our students' behaviour and how we can support them.
The forms will be completed by a teacher with the student and signed. The form will then be sent home for the parent/guardian to read, sign and return to school.
Contact will be made with parents/guardians prior to the form coming home.

We are a School Community, who
Take Responsibility,
Act Safely
and are always Respectful
Further to this, our staff have developed a matrix which highlights the behaviours we expect of all the members of our community.
In these first weeks, the staff are reintroducing their classes to the expectations we have at St. Joseph’s that make our students S.T.A.R.s
Have a conversation with your child about being a STAR at St. Joseph’s.
Throughout 2023, we will be working closely with The Resilience Project to support the wellbeing of our school community.
The Resilience Project delivers emotionally engaging programs and provides evidence-based, practical strategies to build resilience.
Our Partnership Program consists of online presentations and weekly lessons for students, professional development for staff, and Parent & Carer Hub (inc. digital presentations) for our parent and carer community.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing the Parent & Carer Hub with you. The videos are 5-10 minutes long and will walk through the key pillars of resilience: Gratitude, Empathy & Mindfulness. You’ll hear stories and be introduced to activities to show how these strategies can support our kids' learning and development, and also support you as parents and carers.
This program is an important part of our school’s effort to look after the mental health of our community.
View the first presentation of the series here:
Part 1: Meet Hugh and learn about The Resilience Project - https://theresilienceproject. com.au/2023-parent-carer-hub- inspire-hugh/
In this presentation, Hugh shares a personal experience about his sister's battles with Mental Illness.
Note: This video contains a story about an Eating Disorder that may be triggering. Please consider this before watching. For mental health resources and support information, visit The Resilience Project’s Support Page.
The library has now been moved to its new location. Commencing next week, students will return to their regular borrowing schedule. A huge thanks to Tania, Michelle and Caitlin for assistance with the move. The students are very excited to explore the new space.
Issue 3 of Book Club has now been distributed to all students. Thank you to all families that placed orders. Issue 4 Book Club catalogues will be distributed to students on Monday 22nd May. All orders will need to be placed by Monday 29th May.

Rapid Antigen Tests are available from the school office.
Please note that if your child tests positive to Covid-19, it is strongly recommended that students:
- Who test positive to COVID-19 should stay home and isolate for five (5) days;
- Should not attend school after five (5) days if still symptomatic;
- Who are symptomatic but have not tested positive should not attend school until their symptoms resolve;
- Parents, guardians or carers advise the school of the COVID-19 positive test result.
To assist with limiting the spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses, parents, guardians and carers should be strongly encouraged to ensure that their child(ren) remain at home if they are unwell, including if they have tested positive to COVID-19.
Absences & Holidays
In Victoria, it is compulsory for children and young people aged 6–17 years to attend school.
Parents are legally required to ensure their child attends school every day and to provide an explanation for their child's absence from school unless an exemption from attendance has been granted or an exception to their attendance applies.
Absences
If your child is away sick or away due to a planned absence or appointment, please ensure you advise the school office. Student absence text messages are sent out if your child is marked as absent without a reason. In some cases, if you email your child's classroom teacher, they may be away and may not be able to check their emails to forward to the office. It is imperative that you notify the office through one of the following methods:
1. Log into PAM (Parent Access Module) and register your child's absence;
2. Email absence@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au
3. Phone the office on 5623 2943
When sending an email, you may wish to "cc" your child's classroom teacher so they are aware of the absence too.
Holidays
If you are planning an extended holiday (a week or more) during the school term, please email info@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au addressing your intentions to our Principal, Mrs Roslyn Joyner.
