Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
Today I had the privilege of accompanying the Foundation and Years 1 & 2 classes on their excursion to Myuna Farm in Doveton. It was a delightful day. Thankyou to our parent helpers and staff who helped the day go so smoothly. The children were excited to see the animals up close, and to hand feed them, not to mention milking the goats! There will be some tired little (and big) people tonight.
Congratulations to our students who participated in the athletics last week and this week. There were some great results but even more pleasing was the behaviour and sportsmanship of our students. Well done everyone.
Mother’s Day is coming up so I hope that all of our mums have accepted the invitation to come for a special morning tea next Friday. It is one of the highlights of the year. The children love being able to celebrate their mothers.
Please remember it is time for winter uniform. There are still some items of summer uniform being worn and the changeover time has passed. Winter uniform for the next two terms please.
From May 26th until June 14th I will be away participating in an intensive course at Catholic University Belgium. This is sponsored by DOSCEL who are sending two principals, one primary and one secondary. Mr Redi will be leading the school in my absence.
Best wishes,
Roslyn Joyner
Principal

Catholic Education Week - 19 May - 26 May
The theme for this year’s celebrations is based on Colossians 4:6:
The ‘Speaking with Grace’ theme invites us to consider the power of our words and the impact our words may have on others. Words have the power to inspire, uplift, and transform lives but they can also be hurtful or discouraging. This year’s theme aims to encourage students and those in our school community to use their words to build up others, to speak out against injustice, and to spread love and hope in the world.
Catholic Education Week is an opportunity for all Catholic schools to celebrate our distinctive mission and share features that are special about our schools. Members of our staff will be attending a Leadership Mass and Dinner in Traralgon to celebrate and recognise outstanding service and excellence of staff and students in Catholic education in our Diocese.
Grade 3/4F will lead our school community in prayer to celebrate Catholic Education Week at our assembly on Friday May 26th.
A message from Deacon Mark
We Know the Way
Much of the world ignores God until things go badly and then we hear wonder and despair at human cruelty and the “unfairness” of life in general. Why do bad things happen to good people? Why is there cancer? Why do God’s children suffer in Ukraine or Myanmar or Sudan? Christians understand that each and every human is uniquely precious to our Creator, so how do horrific things happen?
If indeed we imagine God as a puppeteer, pulling the strings and orchestrating our lives; occasionally throwing in lightning bolts or other random hurdles for us to jump; a God we expect to respond to our (Christian) prayers by giving us exactly what we think we want then we can see the problem.
But our Creator is not like that! He/she is, indeed, all-powerful, all loving, all wise; giving us stewardship of the natural world in which to co-exist and, crucially, investing us with free will. That is the great adventure of life, working in the world as we find it to make it better!
Without sharing God’s omnipotent knowledge of the world, we do have it in our power to banish warfare, injustice, poverty, inequality and much of the pain of the world; to focus our energies on curing disease and enhancing the well-being of all. Yes, we should be doing better! Hardly seems fair to blame God for our failures!
Christians believe in Jesus’ death and resurrection; his message of infinite love for all. When we let go of worldly plans and expectations and rely entirely on God’s love we realise that, for all our failures, setbacks and inconsistencies, we really do know the way to a full and happy life. John’s gospel this week (Jn 14:1-12) reassures us that following Jesus will bring us to the fullness of life and truth.

Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy
As part of our ongoing commitment to providing a safe environment for all of our students, please find our Child Safety and Wellbeing policy below. This policy outlines our strategies and arrangements to keep children safe, where their participation is valued, their views respected and the voices are heard. It summarises the actions we will take across all 11 Child Safe Standards to ensure a child safe culture is championed and modelled across the school. We ask that parents and carers familiarise themselves with our Child Safety and Wellbeing policy to ensure that families and communities are informed and involved in promoting child safety and wellbeing, and that our whole St Joseph's school community work together to keep children safe.

Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour
In the Classroom
We need your help. The W.S.A.P.B.S. team have selected the best examples that promote the agreed expectations that inform our behaviour at St. Joseph’s. The shortlist will be promoted on Class Dojo with a poll so you can vote for your favourite poster.
Reflection Forms
Some of you may have received a Reflection Form that your child has completed. Thank you for returning them.
The forms allow students to consider their choices, how they felt and how they can make improved choices in the future.
More importantly, they inform us and assist us to gain a better understanding of our students' behaviour and how we can support them.
The Forms will be completed by a teacher with the student. The teacher and student will sign the form. The form will then be sent home for the parent/guardian to read, sign and return to school.
Contact will be made with parents/guardians prior to the form coming home.

Absences & Holidays
In Victoria, it is compulsory for children and young people aged 6–17 years to attend school.
Parents are legally required to ensure their child attends school every day and to provide an explanation for their child's absence from school unless an exemption from attendance has been granted or an exception to their attendance applies.
Absences
If your child is away sick or away due to a planned absence or appointment, please ensure you advise the school office. Student absence text messages are sent out if your child is marked as absent without a reason. In some cases, if you email your child's classroom teacher, they may be away and may not be able to check their emails to forward to the office. It is imperative that you notify the office through one of the following methods:
1. Log into PAM (Parent Access Module) and register your child's absence;
2. Email absence@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au
3. Phone the office on 5623 2943
When sending an email, you may wish to "cc" your child's classroom teacher so they are aware of the absence too.
Holidays
If you are planning an extended holiday (a week or more) during the school term, please email info@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au addressing your intentions to our Principal, Mrs Roslyn Joyner.

School TV - The State of Youth Mental Health
Parents and carers can play a crucial role in their children's mental health. As a result, staying informed on the current state of youth mental health is vital, as it not only affects individuals, but also families and communities. According to recent research, the frequency of mental health disorders among young people is increasing, with anxiety, depression, and self-harm being among the most common challenges.
One of the reasons being attributed to this rise is the heightened stress and anxiety that many young people face in today's society. Academic success, social media, and family issues are all influencing factors. Many young people are still suffering the long-term consequences of the pandemic, such as social isolation, uncertainty, and loss.
Parents can play an important role in their children's mental health. Creating a safe and open environment for your children to talk about their emotions, thoughts, and feelings is vital. Encouraging healthy habits like regular exercise, a balanced diet, and proper sleep can help reduce their stress levels and boost your child's overall mental health. There are also many resources and services available to children, adolescents, and their families, such as school counsellors, various mental health organisations, support lines, and of course, mental health professionals. It is important to remember that seeking help is a show of strength, not weakness, and that early intervention is critical in addressing young people's mental health difficulties.
This edition of SchoolTV, discusses some of the major mental health issues affecting young people and how to support a child experiencing them. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.
