Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
What a wonderful day the students had last Friday at the Colour Run. Sincere thanks to the P and F for organising this event. So many children said this was the best day! The community spirit was alive and well. Special thanks to Jess Youlden and her band of helpers on the day. It was so good to see the students so happy and involved.
Preparation for First Holy Communion continues for those getting ready to celebrate this sacrament for the first time. We pray for these students as they prepare for this next major step in their faith journey.
Today we have the “Footsteps” dance incursion. Years foundation to six will have the opportunity to express themselves creatively and energetically with the assistance of this company. It is great to see how the students gain confidence through this expression.
Preparations are well under way for the Mission Market next Wednesday. The students have been working hard to stock their stalls and the advertising has been amazing. I am looking forward to a very productive day!
Transition for our incoming 2023 Foundation students is progressing well. We are delighted to be welcoming these beautiful new students and their families to our school community.
Best wishes,
Roslyn Joyner

A message from Deacon Mark
Seventy the new sixty?
The first person to live to 150 years of age has probably already been born! Truly amazing! Dramatically fewer people die young and it is a shock to all of us when they do. Seventy is the new sixty and so it goes.
One effect is a breath-taking bravado that we can worry about our Creator God later on, as death approaches. Instead we are urged to "get on with life" to shop 'til we drop, to party as if there are no consequences, to choose basketball practice over church going, to choose new goodies over helping those in need etc. - planning that there will be time to get our spiritual house in order at some later date. What an amazing gamble to take with our eternal souls!
But of course we can't be sure of that. As we start a new church year today, Jesus warns us to, "stay awake, because you do not know the day when your master is coming." (Mt 24:42) We do need to "get on with life!" Life is a God-given gift which is meant to be savoured and enjoyed to the full but for that we need God in our lives each and every moment.
How full our lives are of all these other things which, like our bodies, have fleeting use by dates! God is the constant for us and we need to spend time getting in tune with her. Advent is the Church's call for us to unclutter our lives, eagerly anticipating the coming of Christ into the world and to our lives. Amid all the furore of commercial Christmas, let us prepare by touching base with our Creator - particularly if we haven't done so for a while. Spend a few moments in prayer; get along to Mass; do something generous for those in need - really live life to the full.
Deacon Mark Kelly

Students NOT returning in 2023
At this time of the year we ask families whose children are not intending to return in 2023 to send an email to principal@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au as soon as possible informing of the change. We have a number of enrolment inquiries and are busy working on class groupings for 2023, so it is important that we know of any students leaving (apart from the Year 6 students) that may affect enrolments and class groupings for 2023.
What a fun few weeks we have had celebrating Italian culture at school.
Last week the grades 3/4 students set to work and made fettuccine which they ate with a tomato based sauce. This week the 1/2 students rolled up their sleeves and made Margarita and Hawaiian pizzas - even though we all know that "You don'ta eata frutta ona pizza!"
The foundation children showed how much they have grown up this year by whipping up batches of 'biscotti' with little help from grown ups. E` delizioso!
On Tuesday 6 December the grade 5/6 will round up their year of Italian lessons by making pasta. Lots of fun ahead for them!

Junior School
In 1/2 we have been learning and exploring the concept of Transformations in Maths. We have focused on the differences between slide, flip and turn. The children participated in various activities, practising the different transformations. Students traced a wooden shape, then manipulated the shape to demonstrate how to flip, slide and turn. The children used half and quarter turns. They traced the result of each manipulation.
We have learnt that there are many ways to transform a shape and that, depending on the transformation used, the resulting shape can look the same or different form the original shape.
Middle School
Through our Inquiry Learning, students have been looking at the concept of sustainability and how people can use different designs & technologies to meet the needs of their communities.
Students have been exploring a range of issues that impact our environment. Through classroom projects, students have been focusing on working collaboratively with others to plan, create, and present sustainable solutions. This also connects to our Mission work in RE, as we have been naming ways we can be stewards of God’s creation and take care of our world.
Senior School
The year 5 /6 team and students would love to thank the Parents and Friends committee for a great fun day last Friday at the Colour Run. It was wonderful to see all the students mixing across the grades and having fun. We all hope this becomes an annual event.
The students are very busy getting ready for the Mission Market next week. Yesterday we had a construction day to build all the necessary games, signs, targets and money boxes. This weekend children will need to finalise all their prizes and bring in everything they need to set up their stalls on Monday as most of the grade 6 will be attending the Marist-Sion College Transition Day on Tuesday.
The grade 5’s have also been busy writing their Leadership speeches ready to present to the student body next Tuesday. We have suggested that students involve parents with their speeches to help them prepare so they are feeling confident on the day.
Next week we also have the Senior Swimming carnival. As students start to sign up for events, we would appreciate it if parents could have a conversation with their child to ensure they are entering events at their appropriate skill level. There will be novelty events for non-swimmers, 25m and kickboard events for beginner swimmers and 50m and 100m events for strong swimmers and those who wish to represent St Joseph’s at the next level next year.

LOST PROPERTY
There are a number of items that were left behind from the swimming events. Please encourage your children to have a look in the lost property if they are missing any items.
Please ensure all student belongings, especially jumpers and jackets are named!
Absences & Holidays
In Victoria, it is compulsory for children and young people aged 6–17 years to attend school.
Parents are legally required to ensure their child attends school every day and to provide an explanation for their child's absence from school unless an exemption from attendance has been granted or an exception to their attendance applies.
Absences
If your child is away sick or away due to a planned absence or appointment, please ensure you advise the school office. Student absence text messages are sent out if your child is marked as absent without a reason. In some cases, if you email your child's classroom teacher, they may be away and may not be able to check their emails to forward to the office. It is imperative that you notify the office through one of the following methods:
1. Log into PAM (Parent Access Module) and register your child's absence;
2. Email absence@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au
3. Phone the office on 5623 2943
When sending an email, you may wish to "cc" your child's classroom teacher so they are aware of the absence too.
Holidays
If you are planning an extended holiday (a week or more) during the school term, please email info@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au addressing your intentions to our Principal, Mrs Roslyn Joyner.

School TV - Child Safety & Wellbeing Resource
The latest edition of SchoolTV is now available!
This month's edition is ‘Bullying’. Unfortunately, no school is immune to the impacts of bullying. It is important to have a whole school approach to anti-bullying behaviours and empower parents with the confidence to support a child experiencing it.
This edition outlines practical strategies in how to identify bullying behaviours and how to manage them without overreacting.
Bullying is an ongoing or repeated misuse of power in relationships, with the intention to cause deliberate psychological harm. Bullying behaviours can be verbal, physical or social. It can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious or hidden. Bullying in any form or for any reason can have immediate, medium and long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders.
Despite the efforts made to reduce bullying behaviours, the research tells us that one in four students still report being bullied every few weeks. However, not all negative behaviour should be considered bullying. The key difference is that bullying does not stop on its own. It’s important young people learn how to identify behaviours that are rude, behaviours that are mean, and behaviours that are related to bullying.
Often the reasons for bullying can be complex. Some young people do it to get approval from others, some do it to regain control, whilst others may do it because it makes them feel safe. Supporting young people as they work through their emotions will help them unpack the motivation and reason behind the behaviour.
In this edition of SchoolTV, caregivers can better understand why some young people engage in bullying behaviours and what to do to support a child experiencing it. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.
