Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
It is hard to believe that we have only five more weeks of school for the year. This is a very busy time of the year with lots of fun and exciting things going on. The children are really looking forward to the Colour Run on 18th November and special thanks to the P and F for organising this. The following week we will be having a whole school dance incursion from Footsteps. The grade 5/6's are working hard for the Mission Market Day, whilst also looking forward to the swimming carnival on 1st December.
On the weekend of 3rd and 4th December some of our students will be participating in their First Holy Communion celebration. We wish them well as they take this next in their faith journey.
The year 6 are looking forward to graduation celebrations and their big day out at Gumbuya World, whilst the grade 5's will be enjoying a Billy Cart incursion and of course the Phillip Island camp for both Grades 5 and 6 is coming up as well. Meanwhile, we are still doing assessments and preparing to write final reports for the year.
With the strange weather happening and the excitement of activities as well as Orientation Day, it is timely to take stock for a minute and review healthy eating and sleeping habits for all of us at this time of the year.
Best wishes,
Roslyn Joyner
Principal
Students NOT returning in 2023
At this time of the year we ask families whose children are not intending to return in 2023 to send an email to principal@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au as soon as possible informing of the change. We have a number of enrolment inquiries and are busy working on class groupings for 2023, so it is important that we know of any students leaving (apart from the Year 6 students) that may affect enrolments and class groupings for 2023.
At St Joseph's we expect that our school community takes RESPONSIBILITY, acts SAFELY and is always RESPECTFUL. This week we highlight 'acting safely'. Please have a conversation with your child about being safe when travelling home. We have had a number of community members inform the school of students using the crossing at Burke Street, walking down the street and then darting through the traffic to cross back over. This is very unsafe. Students who wish to travel down Burke Street along Marist Sion side, must join the 'walkers' group for safe passage.
Aussie of the Month - September
Our Aussie of the Month for September is Scarlett Wittmer.
Scarlett is a considerate and thoughtful student. She comes to school each day with a big smile and is always ready to put in her best efforts. She displays great persistence in her learning and continues to work hard in all areas. Scarlett is always willing to offer a helping hand and cherishes the friendships she has. She embodies our school values through her actions.
Congratulations Scarlett!

A message from Deacon Mark
Witness Opportunities!
Much of “the News” would have us believe all is “doom and gloom”, but standing back and getting things in perspective we see that isn’t so. In spite of challenges, difficulties, shames, injustices, unfairnesses and embarrassments we have it pretty good! And what a great time to be a Christian!
We have beautiful churches, the fruit of God’s blessings to us, freedom to worship God in our churches and in our lives and the ability to reach out to those in difficulties, exercising tolerance and openness with those who are different.
There is no denying we Christians confront some complex matters, distractions and diversions we need to deal with. At times waves of anti-religious antagonism crash around us and Christians in other lands suffer actual persecution.
Christianity is often belittled and sometimes even despised in the general media. Our personal faith and the Christianity which has underpinned our nation is under considerable challenge. Values that seemed so obvious they were non-issues a generation ago have been turned on their heads by indisputable new understandings of the world. Christians though have a fundamental understanding of creation and our relationship with the Creator which is enhanced through re-evaluation and re-contextualisation in the light of modern knowledge.
Malachi, writing about four centuries before Christ, dealt with complex social issues as we do, and reassures us in the Lord’s name that all will be well, while Paul reminds the Thessalonians to stay focussed and to live simply and, in the gospel, Jesus urges us not to “drop our bundle” in the face of challenges, wars, revolutions, natural disasters and other fearful sights and circumstances.
These are new opportunities, as Jesus tells us in our gospel (Lk 21:5-19), “to bear witness.” This is our chance to stand tall, living our lives, quietly and faithfully as examples to all. In this way we will find salvation ourselves and conversion of our fellow citizens.

Congratulations to Zaria Dalton who ran great races for her heats and finals at the State Athletics. She finished 4th in the 100m final by five hundredths of a second. An excellent result!
All orders from Book Club Issue 7 have now been distributed to students. Our final Book Club for the year is now available and online. Catalogues have been distributed to students. All orders are due on Friday 18th November.

The end of year is fast approaching. We need to have all overdue library books returned as soon as possible. If your child has any issues with any overdue library books please email Bernie brigano@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au
LOST PROPERTY
There are a number of items that were left behind from the swimming events. Please encourage your children to have a look in the lost property if they are missing any items.
Please ensure all student belongings, especially jumpers and jackets are named!
Absences & Holidays
In Victoria, it is compulsory for children and young people aged 6–17 years to attend school.
Parents are legally required to ensure their child attends school every day and to provide an explanation for their child's absence from school unless an exemption from attendance has been granted or an exception to their attendance applies.
Absences
If your child is away sick or away due to a planned absence or appointment, please ensure you advise the school office. Student absence text messages are sent out if your child is marked as absent without a reason. In some cases, if you email your child's classroom teacher, they may be away and may not be able to check their emails to forward to the office. It is imperative that you notify the office through one of the following methods:
1. Log into PAM (Parent Access Module) and register your child's absence;
2. Email absence@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au
3. Phone the office on 5623 2943
When sending an email, you may wish to "cc" your child's classroom teacher so they are aware of the absence too.
Holidays
If you are planning an extended holiday (a week or more) during the school term, please email info@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au addressing your intentions to our Principal, Mrs Roslyn Joyner.
St Joseph's Colour Explosion Fun Run
The Colour Explosion Fun Run will take place on Friday 18th November on our school oval.
Please ensure that you have granted your child permission through PAM.
A reminder that students must wear 'older' casual clothes to school that day - we encourage white/light clothing for the best effect. The colour powder will likely wash out of your child's clothing. Nevertheless, we recommend that your child wears clothing that you don't mind being coloured.
Please remember that if your child catches a bus, they must change their clothes before travelling on the bus, you may also like your child to change before they get into the family car, please send along a change of clothes.
Thank you to the Parents and Friends for organising the Colour Run. Thank you to all of the children who have been seeking sponsors. It's going to be a great day!
The proceeds for this fundraiser is going towards an exciting new project we are implementing at our school, called The Resilience Project. The program will be implemented throughout the school next year, to all grades.
This is a well being program that compliments our curriculum and our Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour Support. It aims to equip our students with lifelong skills. The pillars of the The Resilience Project are Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy.
If you are interested in learning more about The Resilience Project we highly recommend reading Hugh Cuylenburg’s first book The Resilience Project - Finding Happiness through Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness. This is where our journey began.
