Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
What a delight to see so many happy children participating in the school production “A Tour Around Italy” this week. Thanks to everyone involved with this production. There has been such a buzz around the school. I was impressed by the work that the students put into making the props and the work done behind the scenes by our ‘technicians” backstage, with things like lighting and sound. There are many ways that students can be involved in productions. It is clear that everyone is enjoying the opportunity to be able to be part of a community again. The attendance at the recent Father’s Day breakfast and the audience attendance at the two performances this week are testament to this. We look forward to more opportunities.
Congratulations to our students who celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation last Friday evening at Marist Sion. It was wonderful to see these students taking this step in their faith journey showing maturity and discernment.
Congratulations also to Zaria Dalton who competed at the Victorian Trials to represent Victoria at the Primary School Sports Australia Track & Field Championships. Zaria won her 100m heat and came 3rd in her 200m heat, qualifying for the final in both races. Proudly representing St Joseph’s school, Zaria came just short of winning the finals in both races, however is now placed in the top 8 runners in her age level in Victoria. Well done Zaria!
As we come to the close of another term I sincerely thank students and staff for their hard work over term 3. Please read the attached Class Allocation Policy for your information. Have a refreshing two weeks.
Kind regards,
Roslyn Joyner
Principal
Last week we celebrated Child Safety Week across the school. All students participated in Australia's Biggest Child Safety Lesson. The online webinar addressed topics on boundaries and body parts which is important for children to learn about and is linked to our Child Safety and Wellbeing policy. Classes also revised our Child Friendly Child Safe Policy which can be viewed below. This child friendly version of our policy was written in collaboration with the Year 6 Student Leaders and illustrated by Year 5/6 students.
To assist our parents and carers, we are pleased to announce that we’ve partnered with ‘SchoolTV’ – an online resource designed to empower parents with credible information which includes realistic, practical and ongoing support strategies to help children become happy and resilient young people.
The latest edition of SchoolTV is now available!
This month's edition is ‘Online Gaming’. A great topic to read about in time for the school holidays.
Many parents and carers still struggle to come to terms with understanding the amount of time young people spend participating in this pastime and often raise concerns about its addictive nature. But it is not all bad. There are many positive aspects to gaming also. Families need to find the right balance between their young person’s online world and real life.

Emergency Management - Bushfires
The bushfire season is upon us and normally runs from October until April.
As St. Joseph’s is located in a high-risk bushfire area, the school will be pre-emptively closed in the event that the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) issues a Code Red Fire Danger Rating warning for the weather district in which this school is located (West and South Gippsland - Region). A decision is made at 12:00pm the day before if possible, and will not change regardless of changing weather conditions. If possible, three-days notice may be given to families about the closure. When a school is closed in response to bushfire risk, no one will be permitted on site. This is a part of our emergency management plan for St. Joseph's and every effort will be made to give you advanced warning of a closure.

May the good Lord bless you all on your faith journey.
CONFIRMATION PRAYER
Heavenly Father, God of power and of love.
We pray for the children who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation.
May your Holy Spirit help them to grow in faith, hope and love.
May they come to know you as the one true God who loves them without limit.
May their hearts welcome you gladly;
May their ears hear your voice in the scriptures;
May their eyes see you in all things;
And may they proclaim your glory

A message from Deacon Mark
God wants to save everyone
How we have indulged over the years in creating complexity out of simplicity! We get tangled up in the very myriad of rules and regulations Jesus came to untangle for us. He brought us the best of Good News in his proclamation of the Kingdom. 1 Timothy reinforces the Good News that God wants everyone saved (1 Tim 2:1-8). And if that is what almighty God wants then surely we are saved! Any sense that the Creator’s will is a barrier or hindrance to our salvation is turned on its head. But the final decision remains ours! Only we ourselves can be the obstruction. God wants everyone saved but, in our free will, we need to accept the offer of salvation.
How then do we accept? What are the rules? Jesus teaches that the rules are pretty simple. “Jesus is so simplistic and naïve as to reduce 613 clear Biblical commandments down to two: Love of God and love of neighbour“ (Luke 10:27) (Rohr, R. What do we do with the Bible? p57).
So often our love of God is reflected in our love of the poor and vice versa. We turn to our Creator, “praising the Lord who lifts up the poor” as our responsorial psalm urges us (Ps 112) and “lifting up our hands reverently in prayer (1 Timothy 2: 8) without anger or argument”.
Jesus himself tells us in this week’s gospel, “You cannot be the slave of both God and of money” (Luke 16:13) and the prophet Amos (Amos 8:4-7) starkly warns us against trampling on, swindling and tampering and suppressing the poor. As long as our actions set us apart from the Lord who lifts up the poor, we exclude ourselves from salvation but, if we turn to God, loving him/her and actively loving his children (our neighbours), we have every reason to hope for salvation.

Lexi is a thoughtful and polite member of our school community. If somebody is feeling left out, Lexi doesn’t hesitate to include them by inviting them to come work or play with her. Lexi takes opportunities to encourage others and is a compassionate friend. She comes to school each day with an enthusiastic and motivated attitude towards her learning. Lexi is highly organised and always strives to be the best person she can be. She willingly offers a lending hand to both staff and peers in the school. She doesn’t complain if things do not go her way but instead uses such times as learning opportunities. Lexi embodies our school values through her actions, she is definitely an all-round STAR which makes her a wonderful role model to her peers. Congratulations on your Aussie of the month award Lexi.

In 1/2 DVB we have been learning and exploring the concept of division in Maths. We have focused on the different language used to describe division such as shared between and divided by. The children have also been learning various strategies such as repeated subtraction, equal groups, partitioning, fact families, using concrete materials, and the connection between multiplication & division. Students solved division worded problems and explained their thinking. They developed a deeper understanding that the larger number is at the beginning of the number sentence and the answer must be smaller. We have learnt that there are many ways to show our thinking in order to explain and solve division problems.

Grade 5/6
Congratulations to all the 5/6 children who put in an awesome effort over the last month learning lines, making props and practicing their dance moves for the concert. It was so wonderful to see the children perform with such confidence.
With the sad passing of the Queen Elizabeth 11 the students have been researching her amazing life and service to the Commonwealth. Many students have used google sites to put together their presentation. Students have adapted well to the changeover to Chromebooks and are all showing improvement with their typing skills.
We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.

Absences & Holidays
In Victoria, it is compulsory for children and young people aged 6–17 years to attend school.
Parents are legally required to ensure their child attends school every day and to provide an explanation for their child's absence from school unless an exemption from attendance has been granted or an exception to their attendance applies.
Absences
If your child is away sick or away due to a planned absence or appointment, please ensure you advise the school office. Student absence text messages are sent out if your child is marked as absent without a reason. In some cases, if you email your child's classroom teacher, they may be away and may not be able to check their emails to forward to the office. It is imperative that you notify the office through one of the following methods:
1. Log into PAM (Parent Access Module) and register your child's absence;
2. Email absence@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au
3. Phone the office on 5623 2943
When sending an email, you may wish to "cc" your child's classroom teacher so they are aware of the absence too.
Holidays
If you are planning an extended holiday (a week or more) during the school term, please email info@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au addressing your intentions to our Principal, Mrs Roslyn Joyner.
NO School Buses
Please note that school buses will NOT be operating on Monday, 21 November 2022. Please arrange alternative transport for your child/ren to attend school and return home on this day. Please put this date in your calendar.
LOST PROPERTY
Please ensure all student belongings, especially jumpers and jackets are named!
A sincere thank you to our wonderful Parents & Friends Committee who set a fundraising goal in 2021 to raise funds to purchase new classroom furniture for the Year 3/4 classrooms. The students appreciate the new and innovative furniture. A special thank you to all the families and wider members of St Joseph school community who contributed to the fundraising efforts.
