Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
What a busy place school is! As I walked around this week, I could see many happy student faces whilst they were engaged in science activities. This is especially relevant as it is National Science Week. Next week we will be celebrating Book Week with various creative activities connected to different books. We will be marking Book Week with our character parade and dress up day on Friday 26th August. Remember, participation and fun is the important thing. Keep it simple! Most dress-ups for book characters can be found around the house and in wardrobes.
Many of our year 6 students are busy preparing for the sacrament of Confirmation. We congratulate these students for taking this next step in their faith life. Year 5/6 students will also be having a workshop on motivation and setting goals next week called Dream Big and Goal Set.
Parent teacher interviews are coming up on Tuesday 30th August and Thursday 1st September. This is a great opportunity to work in partnership to improve all student’s outcomes.
We look forward to seeing many dads at the Father’s Day Morning Tea on Friday 2nd September and everyone at our school concert in the last week of term.
Best wishes,
Ros Joyner
Principal
As you would be aware from our last newsletter, the Child Safety Standards were updated to make them stronger on the 1st of July, 2022. As a result, our Child Safety and Wellbeing policy was updated to reflect the 11 Child Safety Standards. It is important for families to be aware of our policy so we have included it below for you to read. It is our key responsibility to keep the children in our care safe at all times, and our Child Safety and Wellbeing policy outlines how we strive to do so.

THE FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION
On Monday 15 August, our grades 3 to 6 students joined many parishioners for Mass at St Joseph's Church to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption.
This Feast day is one of the few Holy Days left in the Catholic calendar. Catholics around the world mark the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, commemorating the end of her earthly life and assumption into Heaven.

A message from Deacon Mark
God Figured Out
Jesus is asked in today’s gospel (Luke 13:22-30) “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” He doesn’t directly answer this impertinent question and his response, ‘Strive to enter through the narrow gate,’ needs some un-packing. Entering by the narrow door might suggest that only an elite group can be saved, as some Christians over the centuries have chosen to interpret the passage. Jesus life and mission, his teaching of God’s unfathomable goodness, forgiveness and the salvation offered to all, says otherwise.
“Sinners are filled with joy to hear him speak of God’s unfathomable goodness: even they can hope for salvation. In the Pharisee camp, however, they criticize his message and also his welcoming of tax-collectors, prostitutes and sinners: isn’t Jesus opening up a road to the watering-down of religion and to unacceptable morals? [Pagola, 2016]
In order to correctly understand the invitation to «enter by the narrow door» we need to remember Jesus’ words that we read in John’s Gospel: «I am the door; the one who enters through me, will be saved» (John 10:9). So, far from watering down or inviting laxity, Jesus mission has been to point to the Father and to himself as the means to the Father. Relationship is everything: Jesus relationship with the Father and our relationship with the Father through Jesus.
Whilst assuring us of the boundless love of our merciful father, Jesus demands greater rather than lower standards. He calls us to «Be compassionate as your Father is compassionate»; «Don’t judge and you will not be judged»; «Forgive seventy times seven»; «Seek God’s Reign and God’s justice». Particularly he warns against those who figure they are an elect or elite who tick all the boxes so they are the winners and everybody else is damned.
No one owns or controls God, and we are on shaky ground when we claim to have God figured out.

Mobile Phones at St. Joseph’s
In accordance with our Acceptable Use of ICT at St Joseph’s, mobile phones are not permitted to be used by students at St Joseph’s Primary School, Warragul. However, we understand that some students may have permission to bring a personal mobile phone to school from their parents/guardians, particularly if they are travelling independently to and from school.
Currently our agreement indicates that students must have their phone switched off and stored securely in their school bag, however, we are in the process of changing our agreement to have this procedure altered.
Students who bring along a mobile phone to school must now check their phone into the office before the school day begins (8:50am). Students will then be able to sign their phones out at the end of the day. This change in our procedure ensures the safety and wellbeing of our students at all times and will begin from Monday 24th August 2022.
Although digital watches are permitted at St. Joseph’s they must not be connected to mobile phones at any time whilst at school. Parents are reminded that if they need to be in contact with their child during school hours, they must contact the school office and messages will be passed on.
We appreciate your support in this matter and ask you to discuss the new procedure with your child so that they are aware of the changes.

Absences & Holidays
In Victoria, it is compulsory for children and young people aged 6–17 years to attend school.
Parents are legally required to ensure their child attends school every day and to provide an explanation for their child's absence from school unless an exemption from attendance has been granted or an exception to their attendance applies.
Absences
If your child is away sick or away due to a planned absence or appointment, please ensure you advise the school office. Student absence text messages are sent out if your child is marked as absent without a reason. In some cases, if you email your child's classroom teacher, they may be away and may not be able to check their emails to forward to the office. It is imperative that you notify the office through one of the following methods:
1. Log into PAM (Parent Access Module) and register your child's absence;
2. Email absence@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au
3. Phone the office on 5623 2943
When sending an email, you may wish to "cc" your child's classroom teacher so they are aware of the absence too.
Holidays
If you are planning an extended holiday (a week or more) during the school term, please email info@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au addressing your intentions to our Principal, Mrs Roslyn Joyner.
