Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
What a wonderful celebration we had for grandparent’s and special person’s day! The children were so proud and excited to see their loved ones at school and by the looks on the faces of the grandparents, they were very happy to be here as well. It is so good to be able to start returning to community events albeit with Covid Safe practices in place. Special thanks to everyone who contributed to providing morning tea for the occasion.
On Wednesday, we held an information session for incoming Foundation students for 2023. We have had several enrolments in already and we remind anyone who is thinking about choosing St Joseph’s for their child to commence school in 2023, to download an expression of interest form, complete it and return it to school. Alternatively, you can phone the school office to arrange a school tour.
Next Tuesday we will be having a production team here at school to produce a promotional film for our school. Thankyou to parents who have responded to the questions about why they chose St Joseph’s for their children’s education. These responses have been considered in creating the content.
We are in the process of procuring green school winter beanies. In the meantime, students are welcome to wear any beanie that keeps them warm outside! As soon as stock is available, we will let you know.
Warm Regards
Ros Joyner

A message from Deacon Mark
Be Still for a Moment
Pentecost Sunday, this conclusion of the great Easter season, is a wonderful opportunity to take a deep breath and set our course. Easter is about celebration and reflection on the depth and breadth of God’s love for us. Those filled with the Holy Spirit at Pentecost day (John 20:19-23) burst from the upper room (Acts 2:1-11) preaching confidently and fearlessly to all people. This is celebrated as the birth of the Church. In an astonishingly brief few years those Spirit filled disciples made Christianity a major player around the Mediterranean and beyond. In those same few years though was revealed an issue which has plagued us since. Those zealously fired up with passion for Jesus message, but forgetting to consult the Spirit were very soon proclaiming their own words rather than Jesus’.
Australian theologian Fr Frank Moloney alerts us that, “without the nourishing yet critical presence of the Holy Spirit, the ”Word” of Jesus is soon forgotten, and we begin to settle for our own “words”……. abandoning the never-ending task of learning from the Spirit …. settling for established ways …. no longer admitting the uncomfortable “memory” of all that Jesus has said to us”. (Moloney, F. This is the Gospel of the Lord p110)
In stillness, openness and humility we must contemplate, reflect, pray, chill, before any preaching or teaching or missioning and indeed in our daily lives. Allowing the Holy Spirit into our lives is often confronting: upsetting our prejudices and biases, our programs, plans and policies. Forgetting or ignoring the Holy Spirit though dooms our activities, whatever good intentions we might have. Pentecost is time to be still, to wait on the Lord, realising that Jesus approaches me as he did the disciples, wishing me peace, conferring his gift of the Holy Spirit and empowering us to pass these gifts freely to others.

National Simultaneous Storytime
Thank you to our Principal, Mrs Joyner for reading the National Simultaneous Story, 'Family Tree' by Josh Pyke and Ronojoy Ghosh.
About 'Family Tree'. It started with a seed, and that seed was me. And, over time laughter filled my garden...
A heartfelt celebration of family, community and seasons of life to cherish and to share.
National Simultaneous Storytime is an important annual campaign that aims to encourage young children to read and enjoy books as well as teach them the value of literacy. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around Australia, New Zealand and the world.
Volunteers
Thank you to those that volunteered to shelve books in our library but more are still needed. If you have some time to spare and would like to assist please contact Bernie via email. No experience necessary.

Book Fair
More books, means more choice, which means kids get to read the books they want to read. The right book can ignite a passion for reading, so we encourage families to work together to create a reading culture at home. Reading expands the mind and nourishes the imagination.
Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour
At St. Joseph’s we have a Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour. This is an approach that the whole School Community (Students, Staff, Parents and Carers) must strive for achieve. It is a structured framework whereby we can establish and maintain a positive social culture in our school community.
This approach outlines the behavioural expectations that promote a climate within our school community that is predictable and known, providing safe learning spaces for all of our students to thrive.
The S.T.A.R. acronym is displayed in our classrooms and in shared areas to remind us of the values that underpin our Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour.
Our S.T.A.R acronym is...
We are a School Community, who
Take Responsibility,
Act Safely
and are always Respectful
It is our school-wide expectation that everyone in our community (Students, Staff, Parents and Carers) will take RESPONSIBILITY, act SAFELY and are always RESPECTFUL at St. Joseph's.
To promote our school-wide expectations, our school awards given fortnightly at assembly are highlight our Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour. In the spirit of St Joseph, teachers select a student who has displayed our STAR attributes of either responsibility, safety or respect for the fortnight. The recipents are awarded one of the following certificates designed by the students of our school.
Have a conversation with your child about being a STAR at St. Joseph’s.
We were thrilled to be able to have our grandparents and special friends back onsite for another Grandparents' Day last week.

National Reconciliation Week
The National Reconciliation Week 2022 theme, “Be Brave. Make Change.” is a challenge to all Australians— individuals, families, communities, organisations and government—to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians.
This year we are being asked to make change beginning with brave actions in our daily lives – where we live, work, play and socialise
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
The dates for NRW are the same each year; 27 May to 3 June.
These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.
27 May 1967 On this day, Australia’s most successful referendum saw more than 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Australian Government power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and recognise them in the Census.
3 June 1992 On this day, the Australian High Court delivered the Mabo decision, the culmination of Eddie Koiki Mabo’s challenge to the legal fiction of ‘terra nullius’ (land belonging to no one) and leading to the legal recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of lands. This decision paved the way for Native Title.
Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Absences & Holidays
In Victoria, it is compulsory for children and young people aged 6–17 years to attend school.
Parents are legally required to ensure their child attends school every day and to provide an explanation for their child's absence from school unless an exemption from attendance has been granted or an exception to their attendance applies.
Absences
If your child is away sick or away due to a planned absence or appointment, please ensure you advise the school office. Student absence text messages are sent out if your child is marked as absent without a reason. In some cases, if you email your child's classroom teacher, they may be away and may not be able to check their emails to forward to the office. It is imperative that you notify the office through one of the following methods:
1. Log into PAM (Parent Access Module) and register your child's absence;
2. Email absence@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au
3. Phone the office on 5623 2943
When sending an email, you may wish to "cc" your child's classroom teacher so they are aware of the absence too.
Holidays
If you are planning an extended holiday (a week or more) during the school term, please email info@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au addressing your intentions to our Principal, Mrs Roslyn Joyner.
LOST PROPERTY
Have you or your child lost a ring? A ring has been handed in at the office. Please make contact if you think this may be yours.
Please ensure all student belongings, especially jumpers and jackets are named!
COVID, the Flu and Staff Shortages
Although COVID numbers have dropped off the radar in the media, we continue to see a surge in infection numbers of both COVID and influenza in our community. Unfortunately the current strain of influenza is proving to be quite debilitating. As a result, we have experienced staff shortages across our school this term. Our school has been lucky to have a wonderful group of casual relief teachers who have filled in for many of our staff. However at times, if a teacher cannot be sourced for the day, your child may be sent to a different classroom to complete activities for part of or the whole day.
We will all need to be cautious over the coming weeks and months. We ask that if your child is experiencing any cold or flu-like symptoms that you consider keeping them home until the symptoms pass, encourage them to have good hygiene practices (wearing masks if needed, washing hands and sneezing/coughing in elbows). We have an ongoing supply of Rapid Antigen Tests for families to access to monitor for COVID-19, please see the school office if you need more RAT kits. We also have a supply of disposable and cloth masks to give out. If you would like any of these, please visit the school office.
PAM is our main platform for correspondence. It is important that you register with PAM and verify your email so you can receive all communication.
