Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
This term we welcome back two past teachers from St Joseph’s-Melia Silver in year 5/6 and Chantelle Jeffers in Foundation. The school community is very happy to have them back on staff.
We wish all mothers in our school community a happy Mother’s Day and hope you have a joy-filled day!
St Joseph’s school is undertaking a school review this year. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the past three years, acknowledge what has been achieved from the school improvement plan set three years ago and to create a new four-year school improvement plan for the future. Schools always need to continually improve across all areas. In order to do this review well, we need data from students, parents, staff and the wider community. Soon you will receive an invitation to complete the usual SRC survey that goes out annually. I am asking you to seriously consider completing this survey either online or as paper copy which is available as well.
As a new principal to the school, I am definitely interested in what people have to say. That is the main way I can find out about St Joseph’s in the short time that I have been here. Even though the questions may seem obscure when answering them, the answers contribute to creating a picture of the school culture. The surveys are independently analysed and the results provide valuable information. There will be two surveys sent out. The usual Insight Survey and a different Catholic identity survey.
Unfortunately, the previous biannual Enhancing Catholic School Identity Survey (ECSI) sent out earlier this year to every family received no responses. We need data from both of the surveys that will be sent out in the next few weeks. I understand that we are all busy, but if you could try to find 20 minutes or so, I would be very grateful.
Warm Regards,
Ros Joyner
Principal

PASSIONIST FAMILY GROUPS
The Passionist Family Group Movement was established in 1972 by Fr Peter McGrath cp at St Anthony in the Fields Catholic Church, Terry Hills in the northern suburbs of Sydney, Australia. From humble beginnings the movement has now spread to New Zealand, USA, UK and Ireland.
Family Groups provide an extended family for all who wish to belong – married, single or divorced, young, old or in-between. There is a giving and receiving by all members of the group to each other. Everyone is welcome to join.
The Passionist Family Group Movement aims to build Christian community through the development of extended families. With loneliness and isolation so prevalent in our society, there is a genuine need for people to know and support each other. Family Groups create an extended family atmosphere within the community and are open to everyone.
The family groups in St Joseph Parish meet monthly. They do a range of activities together such as dine out, meet for coffee, cinema outings, picnic and bocce days.
Our focus is on people caring for, accepting each other and looking out for one another. If you would like to join a local family group please contact the Warragul family groups coordinator, Joe Brady, on 0417 863 839.
Andrew Chinn Concert
We are very excited to be welcoming Andrew Chinn to our school on Friday 20th May.
Andrew worked as a classroom teacher in Catholic Primary Schools for nearly twenty years before moving into his full time music ministry. Andrew has visited more than 1000 Catholic primary schools, performing in 3000 concerts across Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada sharing his music and his faith with children, teachers and parents. He has released 11 CDs, 5 DVDs and 6 picture books, which are used widely by teachers and catechists in the faith development of children.
Andrew will present workshops with each year level throughout the day and then with the assistance of selected students, he will perform a concert to the whole school at the end of the day.
Andrew’s passion is palatable, he has amazing talent, the children love his music and his ability to remember names is extraordinary.
We look forward to welcoming Andrew.

A message from Deacon Mark
"FOREVER!"
What does “eternal life” look like?(John 10:27-30) We don’t have much idea what it entails but the whole purpose of Jesus mission is to proclaim the Good News of eternal life in the Father’s Kingdom.
Many Christians once had a juvenile image of eternity involving floating around on clouds with God the Father, a big white bloke with a flowing beard, accompanied by bunch of angels and harpists. Or the frightful alternative of Dante’s notion of life in a big barbeque. Mostly we’ve come to a more sophisticated understanding of life being either with or separated from God and we’ve come to more fully understand the unfathomable, merciful love of God who invites us to eternity with him, in spite of ourselves.
Our path to eternal life with God is listening to Jesus’ voice, which, beyond the recorded words coming his from his lips, includes the example of his whole person and existence among us: his way of life, his love for all, his teaching, his death and resurrection.
Often we struggle to hear his voice amid the magnitude and variety of voices and examples seeking to influence us. Incessantly we are bombarded by voices pursuing our money, our energy, our time, almost our souls. How difficult it is to be still or open enough to reflect on Jesus’ example, to listen to his quieter voice or the voices of those in our family or community who might need some care and attention. Jesus invites us to follow him to eternal life aware of our difficulties and assuring us of his all-conquering love.
Paul reminds us that, though we will die, “neither death nor life, nothing that exists, nothing still to come, not any power, not any height nor depth nor any created thing can ever come between us and the love of God” (Romans 8:38-39). Whatever eternal life is – it will be good!

Middle School
The 3/4s have had a busy yet exciting start to Term 2. We have been learning about Personal Narratives (in particular small moments) and how to add interesting detail to our writing. Lots of students have decided to write about camp last term or their holidays.
In Maths we have been exploring multiplication and its relationship to division. The 3/4s have had a great time using concrete materials and drawings to represent arrays, groups and repeated addition.
The students have been hard at work rehearsing our performances for the Mother’s Day Cabaret this Friday. We are sure that you will enjoy what we have installed for you.
In Inquiry we are learning about Resilience and the importance of recognising and expressing our emotions. This will help us with our problem-solving skills as well as overcoming difficulties we are faced with. The students had lots of fun creating scenarios, where they mime out a range of emotions and have others guess what emotion they are portraying.
We were lucky enough to end Term 1 with school camp. This allowed the 3/4s to create new friendships and take positive risks in a safe environment. It was great to see students cooperating in groups, encouraging one another and challenging themselves.
Senior School
We have had a great start to the term and are looking forward to seeing all the Mums at our Mother’s Day event on Friday.
This term we will be starting our Maths inquiry into addition and subtraction. We are learning to write persuasively and how to use special techniques to strengthen our arguments. Each class has started a class novel to discuss and develop our vocabulary and comprehension skills.
In religion we are looking at Mary and why she is so important in our faith. Please look out for Mrs Maunder’s beautiful class display about Mary in the corridor.
We have our Winter Sport competition and the school Cross Country all coming up in the next few weeks which we are preparing for.
This term the 5/6 classes are also starting a passion project into a topic of choice. Some children are researching their family connection to the ANZAC, how technology has changed sport or the next pet they would like to persuade their family to buy….just to name a few of the great ideas. Please have a chat to your child about their project to see if you have any resource at home to help with their research.

Holly is a thoughtful, dedicated and considerate student who shows kindness and generosity to all of her peers. She has overcome personal challenges in the past and has transitioned well into the St Joseph’s learning community. She takes pride in all that she undertakes and is a positive role model for her classmates.
We are looking forward to welcoming our Mothers and special guests to our Cabaret on Friday, 6th May.

National Simultaneous Storytime
National Simultaneous Storytime will be held on Wednesday May 25th at 11.00am. This year, we’re excited to be reading ‘Family Tree’ by Josh Pyke and Ronojoy Ghosh.
About 'Family Tree'. It started with a seed, and that seed was me. And, over time laughter filled my garden...
A heartfelt celebration of family, community and seasons of life to cherish and to share.
National Simultaneous Storytime is an important annual campaign that aims to encourage young children to read and enjoy books as well as teach them the value of literacy. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around Australia, New Zealand and the world.
Volunteers
Thank you to those that volunteered to shelve books in our library but more are still needed. If you have some time to spare and would like to assist please contact Bernie via email. No experience necessary.

Absences & Holidays
In Victoria, it is compulsory for children and young people aged 6–17 years to attend school.
Parents are legally required to ensure their child attends school every day and to provide an explanation for their child's absence from school unless an exemption from attendance has been granted or an exception to their attendance applies.
Absences
If your child is away sick or away due to a planned absence or appointment, please ensure you advise the school office. Student absence text messages are sent out if your child is marked as absent without a reason. In some cases, if you email your child's classroom teacher, they may be away and may not be able to check their emails to forward to the office. It is imperative that you notify the office through one of the following methods:
1. Log into PAM (Parent Access Module) and register your child's absence;
2. Email absence@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au

If you are planning an extended holiday (a week or more) during the school term, please email info@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au addressing your intentions to our Principal, Mrs Roslyn Joyner.
School Hats
Has your child misplaced their hat? For convenience, school hats are available for purchase at the school office. The hats are available in size S-M or L-XL and are $15 each (cash only).

Family Favourite Recipe
We are starting a new column featuring a favourite family recipe.
This fortnight, Kelsey Good, mum of Jonah (1/2K) has submitted her family’s favourite: Spaghetti Pie. Yum, thanks Kelsey!
Spaghetti Pie
Prep Time: 30min
Cook Time: 30min
Total Time: 1 hour
Serves: 6
Ingredients:
1 cup mozzarella cheese (or your favourite cheese)
200g spaghetti (a handful)
2 tbsp (40g) butter
2 eggs
1/2 cup parmesan cheese
1 cup ricotta cheese or cottage cheese
2 tbsp parsley
1/2 tsp dried basil or use fresh and add extra :)
500g mince (lean beef)
1 small onion
1 tin of tomatoes, diced and drained (if needed)
2 cups pasta sauce
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 175c
- Cook spaghetti and drain. Toss with butter. Stir in eggs and parmesan cheese.
- Place spaghetti in a greased deep-dish pie plate or casserole dish.
- Combine ricotta cheese, parsley and basil. Spread mixture over spaghetti.
- Brown mince and onion*. Drain any fat. Add tomatoes and pasta sauce. Simmer for 10 minutes or until thickened. Spread over ricotta cheese.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes. Top with mozzarella and bake for an additional 5 minutes or until cheese is melted. Cool for 10 minutes before serving.
Serve with garlic bread. This provides excellent leftovers for dinner the next night or even have it for lunch.
*you can add garlic to the onion and mince mixture for extra flavour
*500g is quite a bit of mince, so you can use less, and it won't mess up the recipe
We would love to hear your family’s favourite recipe, please send any ideas and photos to stjosephswarragulpandf@gmail.com
